AMAN calls on the Palestinian Authority to immediately release all political detainees

Press Release

The Coalition for Integrity and Accountability (AMAN) condemns the aggression carried out by the Palestinian security services on the evening of Monday, July 5, 2021. AMAN considers this aggression to be a very dangerous action that threatens civil security, which included repression, cruel beatings and arrest of those who participated in a peaceful assembly denouncing the arrests and violations of public liberties, freedom of opinion and expression, and the right of assembly and association. They were also denouncing the arrest of many human rights defenders such as Obai Aboudi, Omar Assaf, Nadia Habash, Dr. Deema Amin as well as lawyer Diyala Ayesh and others. Furthermore, the security forces brutally beat and arrested families and supporters who were participating in-front of the police station in Al-Balou’ where human rights activists were being held. Among those withheld is Hind Shraydeh, wife of Obai Aboudi. This is nothing but an indulgence in the policy of silencing people’s voices by force especially since the sit-in was a peaceful one.

AMAN calls on the Palestinian Authority to immediately release all political detainees and not to attack any of them as these actions only indicate the absence of a wise leadership whose duty is to place national interest over personal, party or any other interest, as well as prevent chaos and the establishment of a police state instead of a democratic one hence a negatively affecting the national project of liberation for which the Palestinian masses have sacrificed greatly to achieve.

The voice of reason at this critical time the Palestinian people are living requires a deep understanding of the prevailing conditions of the decline of citizens’ confidence in the political system as a result of the cancellation of the elections, absence of a political horizon and lack of hope, lack of seriousness in dealing with corruption, the impression that the political system exists to serve a limited group and not for the public good, and the absence of platforms and sufficient spaces for popular participation in policy making. The situation requires the search for solutions and exists to the crisis through a national action plan that prevents violence, restores unity and focus of efforts to confront the occupation. This is an opportune time to create conditions for restoring confidence in the political system by allowing people to exercise freedoms provided in the Palestinian Basic Law. And to also put forth policies, procedures and measures that would halt the deterioration of the situation as part of a comprehensive political reform. It is essential that the Palestinian people feel the change through action and methods of treatment including the immediate announcement of a date for holding legislative and presidential elections.
