The “Strengthening Accountability among Civil Society” project, funded by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), comes considering the accumulated political and economic challenges facing the Palestinian territories, which have resulted in weakened oversight and accountability systems and declining public trust in public institutions. Successive crises—particularly the war on Gaza, the escalation of attacks in the West Bank, and the Palestinian Authority’s financial crisis—have further increased corruption risks and undermined transparency in the management of public funds and service delivery.
The project aims to empower civil society organizations, community-based organizations, the media, and citizens, especially marginalized groups such as youth and women, to play an active role in strengthening social accountability and participating in decision-making processes and public policy development, thereby contributing to improved service quality and greater responsiveness to community needs.
The project focuses on three vital sectors: agriculture, justice (court services), and humanitarian aid, through capacity building and awareness raising, activating social accountability tools, supporting community initiatives and advocacy campaigns, and promoting structured dialogue with official institutions. It also seeks to enhance accountability and transparency through knowledge production related to corruption risks in the targeted sectors, including the preparation of studies and monitoring reports. In addition, the project supports investigative journalism to uncover corruption, while also developing mechanisms to track aid distribution and strengthen integrity and transparency.
