AMAN and Ministry of Higher Education Are Developing Accountability Material in 9th Grade Civil Education Textbook

 Ramallah – The Coalition for Accountability and Integrity – AMAN – completed in cooperation with the Higher Ministry of Education a series of training and awareness workshops for 125 teachers of civil education in PA schools in Ramallah, Nablus and Hebron. The workshops are part of the “Education in Face of Corruption – Pupils on the Forefront” Project which is funded by the National Fund for Democracy

Through these workshops which have been implemented in each area for two days, AMAN aimed to consolidate the culture of integrity and anti-corruption among pupils by means of upgrading and developing the capacities of teachers in delivering to pupils concepts relating to corruption and how to combat it, and expanding the perception of pupils about the practices they encounter daily and how to cope with them. AMAN prepared a special teaching guide for teachers providing them with broader knowledge on the teaching of these concepts following simple methodologies and arguments that are commensurate with the level of 9th grade pupils and can be easily. Additionally, the workshops addressed the implementation of extracurricular activities in the sphere of anti-corruption and enhancement of integrity which pupils will be involved in throughout this project and their study program.

AMAN’s Commissioner for Combating Corruption Dr Azmi Shuaibi opened the meeting on the first day by presenting a general and comprehensive overview on corruption in the Palestinian society, including favoritism, cronyism and nepotism, as well as on means to preserve public funds and avoid misuse of public property.  AMAN’s Legal Advisor Bilal Al-Barghouti elaborated on Palestinian legislations on anti-corruption and notification of corruption cases.

On the other hand, Research and Development Unit Director Abeer Musleh talked about her personal experience in teaching Birzeit University students about corruption and about the development of a special guide for teachers.

The meeting on the second day was moderated by representative of Teacher Creativity Center Fadl Suleiman who talked about the experience of the civil society and the Ministry of Education in the implementation of citizenship project. He also spoke about importance of extracurricular activities in combating corruption. Representatives from the Ministry of Education talked about the necessity to implement extracurricular activities in order to raise the awareness of pupils and increase their interest in society. At the end of the second session Programs and Projects Coordinator at AMAN Issam Haj Hussein spoke about the implementation of projects in the field of anti-corruption, promotion of integrity, mechanism of introducing projects to pupils, and the mechanism for selecting winners and rewarding them.

Participants in the workshops interacted well and encouraged the ideas that were put forward for discussion. They lauded AMAN’s perseverance in the propagation of the culture of anti-corruption among pupils, and expressed their willingness and readiness to act as AMAN’s intermediaries in combating corruption and educating pupils on anti-corruption.

It should be noted that AMAN and the Ministry of Education have signed an MoU to unite efforts to combat corruption and raise awareness among young people on the system of integrity, transparency and accountability. The Public Administration for Rehabilitation and Educational Supervision in the Ministry of Education oversees the implementation of the terms of the MoU and joint projects.
