Ramallah – The Coalition for Accountability and Integrity (AMAN) sent a letter to the General Personnel Council, inquiring about the accuracy of information circulating on some news and social media sites regarding the appointment of M. A. in the post of acting director of licensing at a traffic department. To promote transparency and integrity, the inquiry is premised on citizens’ right of access to information from first-hand sources.

This news was met with wide public condemnation. Rumour has it that M. A. only holds a high school (Tawjihi) certificate. This is in contravention to the Palestinian Basic Law, which provides that Palestinians have the right to hold public office and positions, in accordance with the principle of equal opportunities, allowing an opportunity to all skilled nationals to apply for vacant positions at state institutions.

With copies sent to the Ministry of Transportation and State Audit and Administrative Control Bureau, in its letter, AMAN stressed the need for compliance with the principles of equality and meritocracy to ensure that the right persons are appointed to civil service. Appointments will be in line with the conditions of public employment and relevant job descriptions.
