AMAN calls on Ministry of National Economy and relevant bodies to implement the Administrative Court ruling on detained goods of garment traders until the case is decided

Gaza – The Coalition for Accountability and Integrity (AMAN) demanded that the Ministry of National Economy (MoNE) and relevant authorities, including the Public Prosecution and Committee for Follow-up on Government Functions, in the Gaza Strip enforce the Administrative Court ruling, which provided for suspending the MoNE’s decision on detaining imported goods belonging to garment traders until the pending case is disposed and a final judgement is made. Merchandise has been held since 1 September 2022.

In a letter sent to the Gaza-based MoNE Undersecretary, AMAN stated that it monitored complaints by members of the Grament Trader Union, who reported to relevant bodies after their goods had been detained since 1 September 2022. Garment traders refused to pay additional fees, which the MoNE decided to impose on imported merchandise on 27 July 2022. Support of national products was cited to justify the Ministry’s decision. The MoNE announced that import permits would be granted to traders to enter particular textile items until 31 August 2022. Textile imports would then be put on hold.

According to a statement made by the MoNE Director General of Policy and Planning Department to local media outlets, the MoNE required that garment traders have import permits in order to enforce the court decision of 12 September. This was in spite of the fact that the Ministry decided that no more permits would be given by the end of August 2022.
