AMAN reiterates demands for holding general elections in Palestine

Ramallah – Today, 15 September, marks the International Day of Democracy. On this occasion, the Coalition for Accountability and Integrity (AMAN) reiterated its persistent demands to hold legislative and presidential elections in Palestine. AMAN called on the executive power and all relevant parties to work sincerely towards overcoming all challenges to the democratic electoral process.

AMAN is of the view that holding of the general elections, application of the principle of balanced separation of powers, commitment to and respect for the rule of law and judicial independence, compliance with the provisions of the Basic Law, and guarantee of public freedoms, including freedom of expression, freedom of the press and right to freedom of peaceful assembly, are national demands. As confirmed by the Palestinian Basic Law, these are a key cornerstone for restoring democratic life. They are also an important step towards bringing an end to the internal Palestinian political divide, unifying state institutions in both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, rehabilitating disrupted public accountability, and promoting control over public administration and public financial management.
