Ramallah – The Coalition for Accountability and Integrity (AMAN) organised a two-day training workshop for members of the Charitable Association of Jurists in Civil Service in the city of Ramallah. The training was designed to promote preventive action against corruption in civil service.

In her opening statement, Intesar Hamdan, Director of Awareness Raising and Community Outreach, AMAN, made an overview of AMAN’s efforts to fight and raise community awareness about corruption. AMAN has established strategic partnerships with a variety of effective institutions to ensure an integrated effort towards the common goal of a corruption-free society. Hamdan also highlighted the AMAN Award of Integrity and Fight against Corruption. On an annual basis, AMAN presents this award to persons who contribute to promoting integrity and fight against corruption in Palestinian society. Hamdan called interested persons to apply for the award with a view to dedicating collective efforts against corruption.

Bilal Barghouthi, Legal Advisor to AMAN, cast light on the concept, forms, causes, and outcomes of corruption. Explaining key perceptions of fight against corruption, Barghouthi provided a review of major features of the legal framework for combatting corruption in Palestine. Dr. Abdul Rahim Taha, trainer and expert on anti-corruption issues, placed a special focus on international law, fight against corruption, values of integrity, codes of professional conduct, protection of whistleblowers, avoidance of conflicts of interest, among other relevant legal aspects.

The two-day training event involved extensive interactive activities. Trainees engaged in group exercises on anti-corruption laws and in-depth discussions, which favourably impacted the training environment.

Mr. Ala’ ad-Din Kmeil, Chair of the Charitable Association of Jurists in Civil Service, commended AMAN’s effort to provide such advanced, high-quality training. This should sensitise legal officers in civil service of anti-corruption causes and concepts. Kmeil called to scale up cooperation and build more productive partnerships with AMAN towards promoting the values of integrity, transparency, and accountability in civil service.
