International seminar on “Political Corruption”

International seminar on “Political Corruption”

TI Palestine (AMAN) will be holding an international seminar on “Political Corruption”. The seminar is scheduled from 21-22 June 2018 and will be a joint effort of TI Palestine and the Palestinian Institute for the Study of Democracy (Muwatin).
The issue of political corruption is a priority to TI Palestine, since past and current findings of AMAN’s diagnosis reports/researches revealed that political corruption in Palestine and the MENA region is rising at a larger scale. And since political corruption is a global phenomenon and the concepts, forms and consequences differ from one country to other,  TI Palestine perceives that much more research works need to be carried to diagnose this phenomena across different contexts and defining its forms, and challenges in combating it, as well as to pin point on how to measure it, in order to put this issue on the political agenda and advocate towards combating it.

TI Palestine in the last few months had stepped its efforts to engage new local and external partners who might be interested to deeply tackle this issue like (U4 Anti-Corruption Resource Center and the Palestinian Institute for the Study of Democracy) and they agreed to assist with this efforts. After several discussions between the partners it was agreed to start by initiating an international dialogue and debate by bringing together national and international experts to provide knowledge and present papers in this area with focus on the following themes:
- Political corruption: Concept, forms, consequences and mechanisms for combating it
- Political corruption in relation with human rights, development, democratic transitions, justice and rule of law” locally and internationally.
The seminar will be also the first step for establishment of a long-term program in co-operative partnership with the U4 Anti-Corruption Resource Centre and The Palestinian Institute for the Study of Democracy (Muwatin), with the aim of providing more in-depth knowledge in this area, towards developing a specialized metrics or index to measure political corruption that could be adapted to different contexts.
