two day conference in Egypt. The conference was organized and
conducted by Al-Ahram Center and Strategic Studies and the Afro-Egyptian
Organization for Human Rights (AEHRO) and in cooperation with
Transparency International.
During the first day
of the conference, several academic papers were presented by
international and local experts on the subject, which constituted the
basis for discussing the following:
-
the impact of disclosure and transparency on the global financial
and economic crisis
-
Egypt’s share of this crisis
-
Possible coping mechanisms to deal with the crisis and ways to
improve the level of transparency and disclosure in Egypt
The conference was
attended by nearly 100 individuals from all walks of life such as
personnel in banking, auditing, private business, stock market,
investment agencies, international organizations in Egypt, and selected
NGOs. Attendees also included representatives from Transparency
International (TI-S) and three regional TI chapters, Lebanon, Morocco
and Palestine.
During the second day,
a workshop was held to discuss the outcome of the first day.
Attendees included TI-S representative, NC representatives, NGO
representatives and Egyptian academics. At the end of the meeting, the
participants decided that a book be published that will include all of
the papers presented the previous day. They also recommended that
participating NGOs and academics should work on public awareness by
writing articles on aspects that were not elaborated on during the
conference; such as foreign investors and their impact on Egypt’s
economy and the effect the crises has on tourism and ways to minimize
those effects. |
