April 16, 2009- the Coalition
for Integrity and Accountability-AMAN, in cooperation with Birzeit
University Institute of Law and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for
Liberty launched a book titled “Guidelines
for the Right of Association and Assembly in the Arab World”
which comes in the context of the EU funded project on
“Laws Reform”.
The event was held at the
Institute of Law at Birzeit University where law and public
administration students, master’s degree students and university
professors constituted the majority of attendees. Also media
professionals, NGO
representatives, labour union and political parties’ representatives, as
well renowned personalities from the various sectors of society attended
the event.
The
event was opened by Mr. Suleiman Abu-Dayyeh’s welcoming remarks in which
he emphasized the importance of the Right of Assembly. He also pointed
out AMAN’s role in producing this book which took two years. Mr. Abu-Dayyeh
said that four other Arab countries launched the book in February of
this year. However, the difficult political situation in Palestine
prevented us from launching it on the same date.
Dr.
Azmi Shuaibi, Commissioner for Combating Corruption, explained the
reason of holding the launching event at Birzeit University Law Center
by saying that this university represents the epitome of knowledge and
culture for the Palestinian people hence it is an honour to present the
book on its premises.
Dr.
Suaibi indicated that the book can be a guiding tool for NGOs, political
parties and labour unions when developing their own systems that provide
knowledge of the Right of Association based on laws in that regard.
Dr.
Ghassan Faramand, Director of the Law Center at Birzeit University, said
that the book provides several valuable Arab countries experiences on
the Right of Association which Palestinians in general can benefit from.
The
book examines prevailing laws for political parties, NGOs and labour
unions in Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. It also
identifies obstacles and provides possible solutions for legislations
related to freedom of association in the Arab World.
The
book will be distributed to all public and universities’ libraries, as
well as to labour unions, political parties, and NGOs in addition to
attendees of the launching event.
