With support
from the Qatar Government, the Regional National Committee for
Integrity and Transparency held a conference in Doha, Qatar on the
issue of combating corruption on June 9-11, 2008. The conference was
attended by representatives from several Arab countries,
representatives from UN institutions, as well as other famous
personalities. Also present were Arab and Asian financial and
administrative monitoring bureaux.
Palestine
was represented by Dr. Azmi Shuaibi, AMAN’s Commissioner for
Combating Corruption. In exchange of experiences, representatives
from the various countries presented their experiences in fighting
corruption; Dr. Shuabi presented the Palestinian experience. The
purpose of the exchange is to enrich and strengthen capacities of
the Asian countries in developing their systems, policies and
procedures and to enhance their countries' compliance and commitment
to the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
Conference
sessions included important and critical issues which revolved
around strategies and methods of combating corruption. The most
important concerns included: the spread of administrative corruption
in Asia; strategic planning to combat corruption; commitment of the
Asian leadership in fighting corruption; the role of education as a
precautionary measure in minimizing corruption; transparency in
government procurements and public biddings; and integrity in
practices in the business and private sectors.
