Launching ceremony of the coalition “NGOs Against Corruption”

The coalition “NGOs against Corruption” has been initiated by the “Coalition for Transparency and Accountability” (AMAN) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) in order to enhance transparency and accountability in the Palestinian civil society and to support local NGOs in their fight against corruption. At the founding ceremony on the 30th August 2007, the names of the 92 participating NGOs have been publicly read out.

The General Coordinator of AMAN, Dr. Azmi Shuaibi, welcomed the numerous participants and explained the future tasks of the coalition in its fight against corruption. Doing so, he also pointed out the out-standing role of the Palestinian civil society through out history in serving the Palestinian society in all field of life, which has now been even further strengthened by the founding of the coalition “NGOs against Corruption”.  He also pointed out that Palestinian NGOs refuse to give in to the imposed separation between the West Bank and Gaza and that the same celebration is being held in Gaza at the same time.

Thomas Birringer, resident representative of the KAS chapter in the Palestinian Autonomous Territories, emphasized in his speech that the main initiative in the united fight against corruption should mainly stem from the Palestinian NGOs. He was very happy over the interest of such a huge number of NGOs to participate in the coalition “NGOs against corruption”.

The coalition consists of 99 local NGOs and has been founded in the frame of the Nazaha-project. The goal of this body is to have corruption free NGO institutions, promote awareness in the Palestinian society on the issue of corruption, and become the watchdogs for the public sector.  This will, hopefully lead to a more transparent and responsible public administration within the Palestinian Territories.

In order to become a member of “NGOs against Corruption”, NGOs have to enforce the principles of integrity, transparency and accountability within their own structures and show a sincere desire to participate in the fight against corruption, may it occur in the private, public or NGO sector.

A code of conduct, agreed upon in the framework of the Nazaha-project, has been recently signed by 108 NGOs, most of whom are members of the “NGOs Against Corruption”
