AMAN Organizes a Meeting for Civil Society Organizations in  Hebron

Date : May 18, 2006

In the context of its project of enhancing the accountability and good governance among civil society organizations, AMAN held a meeting that joined these organizations in Hebron. The meeting aimed at discussing ways for raising the levels of transparency and integrity in the work of civil society organizations there.

Fourteen organizations participated in the meeting. They all agreed that corruption in some civil society organizations negatively affect the work and reputation of the whole sector. They recommended the initiation of an alliance of civil organizations that work on raising the public’s awareness against corruption. They also suggested granting a special prize for the organization that shows an excellent level of integrity, accountability, and transparency in its work.

When discussing the problems that face civil society organizations, participants mentioned the difficulty of networking among these organizations, the sense of instability their employees face, the absence of local communities’ active participation in the design of their programs which make these programs unrealistic in reflecting the public’s real needs, and the ineffectiveness of their board of directors in some cases. To deal with these issues, participants stressed the need for a project that addresses these issues and aims at raising the professional capacities of these organizations.

Participants welcomed AMAN’s initiative and declared their willingness to participate in anti-corruption activities.
